Cadmium is currently produced as a byproduct of zinc smelting, and is recovered during the vacuum distillation process that purifies zinc. As such, the primary cadmium feedstock material is cadmium oxide, which is then processed to yield other cadmium compounds.
The unique physicochemical and electrochemical characteristics of cadmium make this element vital for several application areas. At present, the major uses of cadmium are in batteries and in solar cell materials.
Cadmium also has traditional uses as a lubricious, protective coating for steel; as a stabilizer for polymers; lithography and photography; and as a pigment material for coatings as well as glass. Emerging applications for cadmium include novel semiconductor materials (i.e. cadmium indium sulfides and selenides) as well as electrical contacts.
