Inorganics - Cobalt and its Compounds
Cobalt is currently produced as a byproduct of nickel or copper smelting, and is recovered from these other materials due to the formation of insoluble cobaltic hydroxide if the hydrometallurgical solutions are treated with strong oxidizers.
Heating this material converts it to cobalt oxides of variable composition, and the metal can readily be formed via reduction with carbon. As such, the primary cobalt feedstock materials are cobalt hydrate, cobalt oxide, or cobalt metal, which are then processed to yield other cobalt compounds.
The unique redox characteristics of cobalt make this element vital for several application areas. At present, the major uses of cobalt are in magnets, colorants, paint driers, catalysts, and carbide cutting tools; although other uses abound. Emerging uses for cobalt and its compounds include pharmaceutical intermediates, fuel cell components, and electroplating.
Cobalt exists in several different oxidation states - the two most prevalent being divalent (cobaltous) and trivalent (cobaltic).
